Black Dolphin

Cephalorhynchus eutropia

OTHER NAMES: White-bellied Dolphin, Chilean Dolphin, Chilean Black Dolphin

Black dolphins are not well known, from only a small number of sightings, a small collection of skeletons, and a handful of stranded  black dolphins. They have a relatively large rounded dorsal fin, a conical shaped head with sloping forehead, and an indistinct beak with white "lips". These dolphins have a dark grey rather than black body that may seem brown at sea, with a white belly, a white throat and a small white patch behind each flipper. Black dolphins have between 56 and 68 teeth in their upper jaw and between 58 and 66 in their lower jaw.

Balck dolphins are shy and rarely acrobatic like other dolphins. When they swim they have an undulating movement, rather like a sea-lion. Those in the south tend to be more wary of boats and difficult to approach. Dolphins in the north have been known to bow-ride. Group size can vary from 2 - 3 but sightings of 4,000 of these seemingly black animals travelling together have been made.

Some interesting facts about Dolphins including the Black Dolphin which isn't so very different from other dolphins.

First Fact about dolphins and the Black Dolphin

Question:-Do dolphins hibernate? Answer: No. In fact, they never fully sleep. When people breath, they do so involuntarily; as they sleep, they continue to breath. Dolphins, on the other hand, must swim to the surface, and then breath voluntarily. As a result, they don't sleep like we do. It is believed that only half of their brains sleep at a time. While one half of their brains is asleep, the other half is monitoring their swimming to the surface to take a breath.

Another Fact about dolphins and the Black Dolphin

Question:-What is the distance a dolphin can travel? Answer: The distance a dolphin travels depends very much on its food supply. The optimum swimming speed is about 8 km/hr. Dolphins sleep about 8 hours a day which would leave 16 hours for travel. This would mean they can travel up to 128 km per day. How much they actually do travel is unknown.

Question:-What are the sounds a dolphin can produce? Answer: All dolphins and whales can produce complex sounds, both for communication among them and for navigation under water. The common dolphin can hear sounds upwards of 150 KHz but generally produce sounds ranging from 1.5 to 11.0 KHZ. Patterns of sounds can be observed, mostly clicking, moans, whistles, trills, and squeaks. Males can whistle to get the attention of females or to warn the group of imminent danger (so does man, we are all mammals).

Question:-Do dolphins have a sense of smell? Answer: Dolphins can taste, but have no sense of smell.

And finally ... about dolphins and the Black Dolphin

Question:-How often do dolphins give birth? Answer: Dolphins like bottlenose dolphins give birth about once every 2-4 years. If the calf is healthy, it will nurse for 1-2 years...weaning takes place then but it takes awhile.
